Mandatory Alarm Type: Photoelectric smoke alarms only throughout all Queensland dwellings. Ionisation alarms are non-compliant regardless of age or condition.
- 240 volt hardwired alarms with backup batteries, OR
- 10-year sealed lithium battery powered alarms
- Standard 9-volt battery alarms requiring annual changes are non-compliant
- Inside every bedroom
- In hallways connecting bedrooms to other dwelling areas
- On each storey if there's no bedroom on that level
- All dwellings built after 1 July 1997
- All dwellings substantially renovated after 1 July 2014
Maximum Age: All smoke alarms must be replaced within 10 years of manufacture date (printed on alarm, not installation date).
- New builds/substantial renovations: 1 January 2017 (already in effect)
- Rental properties: 1 January 2022 (already in effect)
- Owner-occupied properties: 1 January 2027
- Property sales: Immediate (compliance required before settlement)
Substantial Renovation Definition: Work requiring building approval including structural modifications, adding bedrooms or living areas, significant electrical upgrades, and extensions increasing floor area.
