When You Need Professional Level 2 EV Charger Installation

Signs You Need Level 2 EV Charger Installation

Level 2 charging provides significant advantages over standard power point charging. Consider upgrading if:

Level 1 Charging (Standard Power Points) Is Too Slow

Standard 10-amp power points provide only 2.4kW charging, requiring 20-30 hours to fully charge typical EV batteries. This makes daily use impractical if you drive more than 50-80km daily. Level 2 chargers provide 7-22kW, fully charging most EVs in 4-8 hours overnight.

    You Drive Significant Daily Distances

If daily driving exceeds 100-150km, Level 1 charging can't replenish battery capacity overnight. Level 2 charging ensures you wake to fully charged batteries regardless of previous day's driving, eliminating range anxiety for high-mileage users.

You Have Multiple EVs or Fleet Vehicles

Multiple electric vehicles require faster charging to ensure all vehicles are ready each morning. Level 2 chargers allow sequential charging of multiple vehicles overnight or simultaneous charging with multiple Level 2 installations (if electrical capacity allows).

    You Want Future-Proof Charging Infrastructure

Even if current driving patterns allow slower charging, Level 2 infrastructure future-proofs your home for increased EV adoption, higher-capacity battery vehicles, or changed usage patterns. Installing Level 2 charging now avoids future upgrades.

Your Property Has Three-Phase Power Supply

Properties with three-phase electrical supply can utilise 11kW or 22kW Level 2 chargers, providing exceptionally fast charging. Three-phase Level 2 charging fully charges large-battery EVs (80-100kWh) in 4-5 hours compared to 12+ hours with single-phase charging.

    You're Building New or Renovating

New construction or renovations provide ideal opportunities to install Level 2 charging infrastructure cost-effectively. Running appropriately sized circuits during building works is significantly cheaper than retrofitting later, and ensures adequate switchboard capacity from the start.

    Our Simple Process

Our Level 2 EV Charger Installation Process

    1. Electrical Capacity and Level 2 Compatibility Assessment

Glenn evaluates your property's capability for Level 2 charging including switchboard capacity review assessing available capacity for 7-22kW continuous loads, checking main circuit breaker and cable ratings, determining whether switchboard upgrades are needed, and evaluating total electrical demand with EV charging added. Power supply type confirmation includes confirming single-phase or three-phase supply availability with single-phase properties suitable for 7kW Level 2 charging and three-phase properties for 11kW or 22kW Level 2 charging options. Circuit requirements include cable sizing for Level 2 charging loads, appropriate circuit breaker ratings (32-40 amps typical), RCD protection requirements, and distance from switchboard to charger location. Load management includes assessing whether existing electrical demand allows Level 2 charging, determining if load management systems are beneficial, and considering solar integration for daytime charging.

    2. Level 2 Charger Selection and Installation Quote

Based on assessment, you receive specific Level 2 recommendations including single-phase Level 2 options with 7kW Level 2 chargers (32-amp circuits) that add approximately 30-50km range per hour charging, fully charge 60kWh battery in 8-9 hours, and are suitable for most residential properties. Three-phase Level 2 options include 11kW Level 2 chargers (16-amp three-phase), 22kW Level 2 chargers (32-amp three-phase), adds 50-100km range per hour charging, and fully charges large batteries in 4-5 hours. Complete installation quote includes Level 2 charger unit supply, dedicated circuit installation (switchboard to charger location), any switchboard upgrades required, installation labour and testing, weatherproofing for outdoor installations, and certification and compliance documentation.

    3. Professional Level 2 Installation

On installation day, Glenn completes all electrical work to Australian Standards starting with dedicated high-load circuit installation including installing 32-40 amp circuit breakers (depending on charger rating), running appropriately sized cables (typically 6mm² or 10mm²), cable sizing accounting for length and ambient temperature, and installing Type A RCD protection as required. Level 2 charger installation includes securely mounting charger unit to wall or dedicated post, making final electrical connections with proper terminations, installing weatherproof enclosures for outdoor locations, and professional cable management and finishing. Safety and compliance includes all work complying with AS/NZS 3000:2018 standards, proper earthing and fault protection, testing circuit protection devices, and verifying correct charger operation. Throughout installation, we protect your property and maintain professional standards.

    4. Level 2 System Testing and Configuration

Before handover, comprehensive testing ensures optimal Level 2 performance including testing full charging power delivery (7kW, 11kW, or 22kW), verifying circuit protection operates correctly, checking RCD response times, configuring smart charger features (scheduling, load management, solar integration), demonstrating Level 2 charging speeds and operation, and providing Electrical Safety Certificate and manufacturer documentation. You receive complete records of installation specifications, charging capabilities, and maintenance requirements.

Why Upgrade from Level 1 to Level 2 Charging?

Key Differences: Level 2 vs Level 1 Charging

Level 2 charging provides significant advantages over standard power point charging for daily EV use.

    Significantly Faster Charging

Level 2 chargers deliver 7-22kW compared to Level 1's 2.4kW. This translates to Level 1 providing 10km range per hour charging, Level 2 (7kW) providing 30-50km range per hour, Level 2 (11kW) providing 50-70km range per hour, and Level 2 (22kW) providing 80-120km range per hour.

    Practical Overnight Charging

Level 2 charging fully replenishes batteries overnight regardless of daily driving. Level 1 charging often can't restore full capacity if you've driven more than 80-100km that day.

    Support for Larger Battery EVs

Modern EVs increasingly feature 70-100kWh batteries. Level 2 charging handles these larger capacities practically (8-12 hours full charge) whilst Level 1 would require 30-40 hours.

    Smart Charging Features

Most Level 2 chargers include sophisticated features like scheduled charging for off-peak rates, solar integration, load balancing, and remote monitoring. Basic Level 1 charging lacks these optimisation capabilities.

    Future-Proof Infrastructure

As EVs evolve with larger batteries and faster charging capabilities, Level 2 infrastructure remains relevant. Level 1 charging increasingly becomes impractical as vehicle technology advances.

    Better for Property Value

Level 2 charging infrastructure significantly enhances property marketability. Future buyers expect proper EV charging capability, making Level 2 installations valuable property improvements whilst Level 1 charging (standard power points) offers no added value.

Level 2 EV Charger Compliance and Standards

Professional Level 2 installation ensures every standard is met for safe, reliable operation.

AS/NZS 3000:2018 Requirements: All installations include dedicated circuits with appropriate protection devices, cable sizing meeting voltage drop and current capacity requirements, Type A RCD protection for earth fault safety, and proper circuit isolation and labelling.

Circuit Protection: Installations include 32-amp circuit breakers typical for 7kW single-phase chargers, 40-amp breakers for higher-power installations, and RCD devices meeting Australian Standards response times.

Installation Standards: Licensed electrician installation mandatory, weatherproof installations for outdoor chargers (IP65 rating minimum), secure mounting to structural elements, and professional cable management and terminations.

Charger Unit Standards: Level 2 chargers must meet Australian electrical equipment standards, include built-in safety features (overcurrent protection, earth fault detection, temperature monitoring), and display certification marks from recognised testing authorities.

    Home EV Charging Infrastructure

    Property
    1980s brick home
    Charger
    7kW Type 2
    Cable Run
    15m Dedicated

    The Challenge

The homeowner's Mount Lofty home had an original 63-amp main switch and no spare capacity in the switchboard. They needed a dedicated EV charger circuit installed in the garage, 15 metres from the switchboard.

    Our Solution

Glenn upgraded the switchboard to accommodate the additional load, then ran a dedicated 32A circuit on 6mm² cable through the ceiling cavity and down into the garage. He installed a 7kW Type 2 charging unit on a dedicated RCBO.

    The Outcome

The homeowner now charges their EV overnight from a dedicated circuit that doesn't affect household power. The switchboard upgrade also provided spare capacity for future additions like solar battery storage.
