    Do You Actually Need the Wall Connector?

    This is the first thing worth sorting out, so here's the straight answer.

    Your Tesla charges fine off a normal Type 2 charger. Every new EV sold here uses Type 2, so a standard home charger will do the job overnight. You don't have to buy Tesla's unit.

    What the Wall Connector adds is the Tesla side of it. Charging status, history and scheduling live in the Tesla app you already use, rather than a second app from another brand. Firmware updates come down over your WiFi on their own.

    The headroom is on three-phase. On single-phase the Wall Connector tops out at 7.4kW, the same as any other home charger. On three-phase the unit is rated to 22kW, and a Tesla will take up to 11kW of that.

    Having that rating and being able to use it are two different things, and it comes down to your supply. That's the next section.

    What Your House Can Actually Run

    A Wall Connector is adjustable. Glenn sets the current it's allowed to draw when he commissions it, to suit your supply.

    Until 1 October 2026, anything over 20 amps on single-phase had to be managed by Ergon, so a lot of Wall Connectors were set at 20 amps. That rule's gone. Most single-phase homes can now run one at the full 32 amps (7.4kW) on normal power, with no control device.

    What still decides it is your mains cable and switchboard. Glenn checks both before he sets the limit, and if your supply needs upgrading he'll tell you before anything starts.

    Three-phase is the exception. If your place already has it, the Wall Connector can run properly quick with no Ergon control device, up to the 11kW a Tesla takes.

    One app, not two

    Tesla pushes firmware over WiFi. You don't have to do anything, but it does need WiFi reaching wherever the unit's mounted.

      He checks the switchboard for room and capacity, then works out where the unit goes and how the cable gets there.

    2. You get the options and a real number

      Wall Connector, install and any switchboard work, itemised. If a plain Type 2 charger suits you better he'll say so.

    3. Install day

      New circuit and Type A RCD in the board, cable run, unit mounted and sealed.

    4. Commissioned and set

      Current limit set to suit your supply, WiFi connected, and the Tesla app paired.

    5. Certification on your invoice

      Your compliance certification comes with your invoice. Keep it for your records and your insurer. Glenn's workmanship is covered for life.

    The Challenge

    The switchboard sat on the opposite side of the house from the double garage, and the owner didn't want cable running around the outside.

    Our Solution

    Glenn ran the dedicated circuit through the roof cavity and down inside the wall, then mounted the Wall Connector at a height that reaches both car bays, on its own RCBO in the board.

    The Outcome

    It looks factory-fitted. There's also room to add a second Wall Connector later and let Power Sharing split the supply between two cars.

    It depends on your place. Glenn's installs start from $770 for a back-to-back install or one beside the switchboard, with the Wall Connector on top. Most supply-and-install jobs are $1,500 to $2,000, depending on the installation and the charger. Bigger installs cost more. What moves it is how far the unit sits from the switchboard, whether the board has room for another circuit, and whether you're on single-phase or three-phase. Glenn comes out, looks at what you've got, and gives you a real number before anything starts.
