The right EV charger connection depends on your home's electrical supply. Glenn assesses every property individually and recommends the option that genuinely suits your situation.
20A Primary Tariff (4.6kW) — Glenn's Recommendation for Most Homes For most single-phase Queensland homes, the 20A primary tariff connection is the best option. It charges overnight without issue, uses your solar during the day, and doesn't require any Ergon or Energex involvement — no extra approvals, relay charges, or waiting. Your power is always available. As a real-world example, a 20A connection charges a Kia EV5 from 40% to 80% in about 5 hours.
32A (7kW) Secondary Tariff — Faster on Paper, but with Trade-offs A 32A secondary tariff connection charges faster when the car accepts full power, and uses cheaper off-peak electricity rates. However, most cars won't always draw the full 32A — the actual speed depends on the vehicle's state of charge, its own settings, and temperature. Ergon controls when power is available — it may be interrupted during peak demand. You also can't use solar generation with this setup, and there are additional Ergon charges for relay installation.
32A with Active Management — Ergon charges will apply (not just "may"). This is an additional cost on top of your installation.
32A (22kW) Three-Phase — Maximum Speed If your home has three-phase power, you can run a 32A charger at 22kW without any Ergon involvement (they only require notification above 40 amps per phase). This is the fastest residential charging option, and you can fully use your solar generation.
