When You Need EV Charger Troubleshooting & Repair

Signs Your EV Charger Needs Professional Attention

Watch for these warning signs indicating your EV charger needs professional troubleshooting and repair:

Your EV Charger Has Stopped Working Completely

Chargers that won't power on, show no indicator lights, or completely fail to respond indicate serious faults requiring professional diagnosis. Issues may include circuit protection problems, internal charger failures, or electrical supply issues. Professional troubleshooting identifies root causes and appropriate repairs.

    Charging Is Intermittent or Unreliable

Chargers that work sporadically, stop mid-charge, or require multiple connection attempts indicate electrical or charger component issues. Intermittent problems are often difficult to diagnose but professional systematic troubleshooting identifies underlying causes whether electrical, environmental, or charger-related.

Charging Speed Is Significantly Slower Than Expected

If your charger previously provided faster charging but now delivers reduced power, issues may include degraded electrical connections, circuit problems, or charger component failures. Professional diagnosis determines whether problems lie in electrical infrastructure or charger units themselves.

Charger Displays Error Codes or Warning Lights

Modern smart chargers display error codes indicating specific faults. Professional interpretation of these codes, combined with electrical testing, identifies exact issues and appropriate repairs. Error codes may indicate ground faults, overtemperature conditions, communication failures, or other specific problems.

    Circuit Breakers Trip When Charging

Frequent circuit breaker trips during charging indicate overload conditions, ground faults, or deteriorating electrical components. Professional troubleshooting identifies whether issues originate from charger faults, circuit problems, or inadequate electrical capacity, determining appropriate repairs.

Network Connectivity or App Control Issues

Smart chargers losing WiFi connectivity, failing to respond to app commands, or displaying offline status require systematic troubleshooting. Issues may include network configuration problems, charger firmware issues, or communication hardware failures within charger units.

    Our Simple Process

Our EV Charger Troubleshooting & Repair Process

    1. Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessment (30-60 Minutes)

Glenn conducts systematic troubleshooting to identify fault causes. Initial issue investigation includes discussing symptoms, when problems started, and any changes before issues appeared, observing charger behaviour and indicator lights, checking for visible damage, overheating signs, or physical issues, and reviewing error codes or warning displays. Electrical infrastructure testing involves testing circuit protection devices (circuit breakers, RCDs), measuring voltage at charger location, checking circuit continuity and insulation resistance, testing earth fault loop impedance, and verifying proper RCD operation and response times. Charger unit testing includes testing charger internal components where accessible, checking output voltage and current delivery, testing communication systems (WiFi, network connectivity), verifying proper indicator light operation, and testing charging initiation with vehicle if available. Environmental and installation review involves checking for moisture ingress in outdoor installations, assessing mounting security and cable condition, identifying any physical damage or deterioration, and checking terminations for looseness or corrosion.

    2. Diagnosis Report and Repair Recommendations

After diagnostic testing, you receive clear fault identification. Problem identification includes specific fault causes identified through testing, whether issues are charger-related, electrical infrastructure, or both, and severity assessment (immediate safety concerns vs performance issues). Repair options include component replacement if charger units have failed parts, electrical circuit repairs if infrastructure issues identified, network reconfiguration if connectivity problems, and complete charger replacement if economically justified. Cost estimates include labour for repairs, replacement components or charger units if required, any electrical infrastructure work needed, and comparison of repair vs replacement costs when applicable. Timeline includes availability of replacement parts if needed, repair scheduling, and whether interim solutions exist whilst awaiting parts.

    3. Professional Repair Execution

Once diagnosis and repairs are approved, Glenn completes necessary work. Electrical infrastructure repairs include replacing faulty circuit breakers or RCD devices, repairing deteriorated connections or terminations, upgrading inadequate circuits if undersized, and resolving earth fault or voltage issues. Charger component repairs include replacing damaged charging cables or connectors, repairing or replacing communication modules, addressing moisture damage or corrosion, and upgrading firmware if software issues identified. Network and configuration fixes include reconfiguring WiFi connectivity, resetting charger communication systems, updating firmware to resolve known issues, and reconfiguring smart charging features. Complete system restoration includes testing all repairs thoroughly, verifying charging at full rated power, confirming resolution of original fault symptoms, and ensuring all safety systems operate correctly.

    4. Testing, Verification, and Prevention Advice

After repairs, comprehensive verification ensures reliable operation. Testing includes testing full charging cycle completion, verifying circuit protection operates correctly, confirming charging speed matches specifications, and testing smart features and network connectivity if applicable. You receive advice on preventing future issues and recommendations for maintenance schedules if applicable. You receive documentation of repairs completed, parts replaced, and testing results confirming restored operation.

Key Differences: Professional Troubleshooting vs DIY Diagnosis

    Professional Troubleshooting Advantages:

Systematic Diagnostic Approach: Professional electricians use systematic testing procedures identifying root causes rather than guessing. Proper testing equipment (insulation resistance testers, earth fault loop impedance meters, RCD testers) provides definitive fault identification impossible with basic multimeters or visual inspection.

Electrical Safety Knowledge: EV charger troubleshooting involves working with high-power electrical systems. Professional electricians understand safety procedures, proper isolation techniques, and testing methods preventing electric shock risks. DIY troubleshooting can be dangerous without proper training.

Charger-Specific Expertise: Different charger brands use different technologies, error codes, and fault indicators. Professional experience across multiple charger types enables accurate interpretation of symptoms and appropriate repair approaches. DIY troubleshooting often misinterprets symptoms leading to incorrect repairs.

Proper Repair Techniques: Professional repairs use appropriate components, correct installation techniques, and comply with Australian Standards. DIY repairs often use inappropriate parts, incorrect methods, or create additional safety hazards whilst attempting to resolve original problems.

Warranty Preservation: Many charger warranties require professional repair for validity. DIY repairs or unauthorised technician work may void warranties, potentially costing thousands if charger replacement becomes necessary. Professional repairs maintain warranty coverage.

Legal Compliance: Queensland electrical safety regulations require licensed electricians perform electrical repairs. DIY electrical work on fixed installations including EV chargers is illegal and potentially dangerous, exposing property owners to liability if fires or injuries occur.

Common EV Charger Problems and Solutions

Problem: Circuit Breaker Trips During Charging Common causes include ground faults in charger or circuit, overload from inadequate circuit sizing, or deteriorating RCD devices. Professional diagnosis tests circuit protection, identifies fault locations, and implements appropriate repairs whether replacing faulty chargers, upgrading circuits, or replacing protection devices.

Problem: Charger Won't Initiate Charging Causes include communication failures between charger and vehicle, faulty charging cables, internal charger failures, or incompatible charging settings. Systematic testing identifies whether issues are charger-related, vehicle-related, or compatibility problems, determining appropriate solutions.

Problem: Charging Stops Unexpectedly Mid-Cycle Intermittent stops indicate overheating protection activating, loose electrical connections, ground fault detection, or charger component failures. Professional diagnosis identifies why protection systems activate, addressing root causes rather than simply resetting chargers.

Problem: Reduced Charging Speed Slower charging than expected indicates inadequate voltage supply, deteriorating connections increasing resistance, charger power limiting due to overtemperature, or incorrect power settings. Testing identifies electrical supply issues versus charger component degradation.

Problem: Smart Features Not Working WiFi connectivity loss, app control failures, or charging scheduling not functioning indicate network configuration issues, charger communication hardware failures, or firmware problems. Systematic troubleshooting distinguishes network issues from charger hardware faults.

Problem: Physical Damage or Weather Exposure Outdoor chargers sometimes suffer impact damage, moisture ingress, or UV degradation. Professional assessment determines whether damage affects safety or performance, implementing appropriate repairs or replacement recommendations.

    Home EV Charging Infrastructure

    Property
    1980s brick home
    Charger
    7kW Type 2
    Cable Run
    15m Dedicated

    The Challenge

The homeowner's East Toowoomba home had an original 63-amp main switch and no spare capacity in the switchboard. They needed a dedicated EV charger circuit installed in the garage, 15 metres from the switchboard.

    Our Solution

Glenn upgraded the switchboard to accommodate the additional load, then ran a dedicated 32A circuit on 6mm² cable through the ceiling cavity and down into the garage. He installed a 7kW Type 2 charging unit on a dedicated RCBO.

    The Outcome

The homeowner now charges their EV overnight from a dedicated circuit that doesn't affect household power. The switchboard upgrade also provided spare capacity for future additions like solar battery storage.
