When Switchboard Relocation is Needed
Switchboard relocation addresses renovation conflicts, accessibility issues, safety concerns, and compliance requirements throughout Toowoomba properties.
Renovation Conflicts with Current Location
Most common reason for switchboard relocation. Kitchen renovations where switchboard currently in area becoming cabinetry or benchtops, bathroom expansions encompassing switchboard location (non-compliant wet area placement), wall removal for open-plan conversions removing walls where switchboard mounted, or room conversions affecting switchboard location. Rather than constraining renovations around immovable switchboard, relocate board to enable desired improvements without design compromises.
Accessibility Issues
Current location preventing proper access. Switchboard blocked by wardrobes, shelving, or storage making emergency access impossible. Located in bedrooms, offices, or spaces that may be locked preventing emergency access. Concealed in built-in storage requiring removal of contents for access. AS/NZS 3000 requires switchboards be readily accessible—many older installations violate these requirements.
Safety and Compliance Concerns
Current location creating safety issues. Switchboards located dangerously close to hot water systems, in bathrooms or wet areas categorically non-compliant with dangerous moisture exposure, adjacent to gas meters, fuel storage, or combustible materials, with insufficient clearances less than required 1 metre working space, or external switchboards without adequate weather protection. These non-compliant locations require relocation to meet current safety standards.
Heritage Property Requirements
Character home considerations. Visible board detracting from period features or modern switchboard visually incompatible with heritage interiors. Heritage restoration work requiring switchboard removal restoring rooms to period condition. Sympathetic placement moving switchboard to less obtrusive location preserving architectural character. Building survey requirements or heritage overlays requiring relocation as renovation condition. Glenn has extensive experience with switchboard relocations in Toowoomba's heritage homes.
Aesthetic Preferences and Open-Plan Living
Modern design considerations. Open-plan conversions removing walls exposing previously concealed switchboards. Designer kitchen renovations where visible switchboard incompatible with kitchen design. Minimalist interiors with preference for electrical infrastructure hidden from living areas. Feature wall considerations with switchboard located on wall becoming design feature. Client presentation areas like home offices or consulting rooms where professional appearance matters. Whilst not safety-critical, aesthetic relocations improve property presentation and homeowner satisfaction.
Property Additions and Extensions
Building expansions affecting switchboard location. Extension construction making current switchboard internal rather than external. Second storey additions affecting switchboard accessibility. Garage conversions to living space requiring switchboard relocation from converted area. Deck or alfresco construction enclosing external switchboards. Structural modifications affecting switchboard mounting or access. Extensions often necessitate switchboard relocation to maintain accessibility and compliance.
Insurance or Electrical Safety Office Requirements
Mandated relocations. Insurance company conditions requiring switchboard relocation from non-compliant locations. Electrical Safety Office directions requiring relocation following inspections. Building certifier requirements mandating relocations as building approval conditions. Rental property compliance with landlord obligations requiring accessible switchboard locations. Pre-sale compliance with building inspections identifying relocation requirements before property sales. These mandatory relocations must be completed by licensed electrical contractors with proper certification.
Benefits of Switchboard Relocation
Switchboard relocation enables renovations, improves accessibility, achieves compliance, and enhances property presentation.
Enable Desired Renovations
Relocation unlocks renovation possibilities. Remove design constraints by no longer designing renovations around immovable switchboard. Optimal room layouts positioning walls, cabinetry, and fixtures where desired without electrical constraints. Maximise space use utilising entire room area without switchboard location restrictions. Complete design freedom for architects and designers unconstrained by electrical infrastructure. Better property flow with room configurations optimised for contemporary living. Don't let switchboard location dictate renovation decisions—relocate to enable ideal designs.
Improve Emergency Accessibility
Better access in urgent situations. Unobstructed access with clear path to switchboard for emergency isolation. No locked doors with switchboard accessible without keys or unlocking rooms. Visible location easy to find during emergencies, even for unfamiliar occupants or visitors. Adequate clearance providing space to safely operate switchboard in emergency situations. Family access with location accessible to all household members, not just some. Improved accessibility potentially critical during electrical emergencies requiring immediate isolation.
Meet Current Compliance Standards
Achieve AS/NZS 3000 compliance. Correct clearances with 1 metre clear working space in front of switchboard. Appropriate IP rating providing environmental protection suitable for location. Safe separation with adequate distance from water, gas, and combustibles. Proper mounting height between 1.2-2 metres to centre of switchboard. Accessibility requirements with switchboard readily accessible without removing obstructions. Compliant location demonstrates proper electrical installation and supports insurance coverage.
Enhance Property Presentation
Aesthetic improvements. Remove visual clutter with switchboard relocated from visible living areas. Interior design flexibility with room appearance unconstrained by electrical equipment. Cleaner lines with walls and kitchen areas without electrical infrastructure. Period property integrity with heritage homes maintaining character without modern electrical visible. Professional spaces with home offices and consulting rooms presenting professionally. Better presentation enhances property enjoyment and resale appeal.
Opportunity for Switchboard Upgrades
Relocation enables simultaneous improvements. Upgrade during move installing modern switchboard rather than relocating old board. Add RCD protection installing safety switches if currently lacking. Increase capacity sizing switchboard for current and future needs. Add additional circuits whilst relocating switchboard. Future-proof installation with modern components and adequate capacity during relocation. Combining relocation with upgrades maximises value and avoids future work.
Improved Safety and Protection
Better location enhances safety. Away from moisture with relocation eliminating water exposure risks. Away from heat sources no longer adjacent to hot water systems or heating. Proper ventilation with better heat dissipation in appropriate location. Reduced physical damage risk with location less susceptible to impacts or damage. Environmental protection with appropriate IP rating for new location. Safer location reduces electrical hazards and extends switchboard lifespan.
Enable Future Property Modifications
Flexible infrastructure placement. Anticipate future changes with location accommodating potential renovations. Central distribution with better circuit distribution from central location. Expansion ready with location allowing circuit additions without constraints. Renovation proof with position unlikely to conflict with foreseeable modifications. Optimal permanent location once relocated properly, unlikely to require future moves. Strategic relocation considers long-term property use and potential modifications.
How G-TEC Electrical Relocates Switchboards
Relocation Assessment & Planning
Glenn evaluates relocation requirements thoroughly. Current location assessment examining existing switchboard location, condition, mounting, and accessibility. New location evaluation inspecting proposed location for compliance, suitability, and accessibility. Distance calculation measuring relocation distance affecting cable requirements. Circuit cable assessment evaluating whether existing circuit cables reach new location. Main cable evaluation assessing whether service cable reaches new location or requires extension. Mounting surface assessment verifying new location has appropriate mounting surface. Access route planning determining cable routing from circuits to new switchboard location. Structural obstacles identification identifying walls, floors, and roof spaces requiring penetration. Compliance verification ensuring new location meets AS/NZS 3000 clearance and accessibility requirements.
Detailed Relocation Design
You receive comprehensive relocation plan. New switchboard location with precise mounting position meeting compliance requirements. Circuit cable strategy explaining how existing circuits will reach new location whether through extension, replacement, or rerouting. Main cable requirements addressing whether main cable reaches new location or requires energy provider extension. New switchboard recommendation advising whether relocating old board or upgrading to modern switchboard during move. Wall penetrations required listing holes through walls, floors, and ceiling spaces with sealing methods. Cable routing plan explaining how cables run from current location to new location concealed or surface-mounted. Previous location restoration describing how old switchboard location will be restored, sealed, and made good. Timeframe estimate with realistic duration including power outage length. Upgrade opportunities presenting options to upgrade switchboard components during relocation. Complete pricing covering labour, materials, main cable work, finishing, and certification.
Switchboard Relocation Installation
Installation day varies by complexity. Preparation includes arriving with all materials, switchboard components, tools, and safety equipment. Protecting floors, furniture, and work areas along cable routes. Coordinating power outage timing with household. Contacting energy provider if main cable work required. New location preparation installs mounting board at new location with timber backing on brick or appropriate fixing to studs. Ensuring mounting surface solid, level, and appropriate for switchboard weight. Preparing cable entry points into new switchboard location. Drilling wall and floor penetrations required for cable routing. Installing conduit or cable protection through penetrations. Cable extension or replacement varies by distance—short relocations may extend existing circuit cables, medium relocations require new cable runs, long relocations typically require complete circuit cable replacement. Running new cables through roof spaces, wall cavities, and under floors as planned. Installing cable protection, saddles, and proper securing throughout routes. Labeling all cables at both ends for circuit identification. Main cable extension if required coordinates with energy provider for isolation, installs extended main cable from street entry to new switchboard location, runs main cable through appropriate protection, and provider reconnects at street entry point. Switchboard installation at new location mounts board securely to prepared backing, installs main switch and circuit breakers, connects main cables ensuring proper terminations, installs modern earthing connections, connects all circuit cables to appropriate breakers, reorganises circuits for better distribution if upgrading, installs RCDs if upgrading during relocation, and labels all circuits clearly. Previous location restoration removes old switchboard and mounting board, fills mounting bolt holes, seals wall penetrations where cables entered, plasters or fills cavity appropriately, matches existing wall finish where possible, and paints or textures to blend with surrounding wall.
Testing & Certification
Comprehensive testing at new location. Pre-energisation testing includes insulation resistance testing on all extended or modified circuits, earth continuity testing throughout installation, polarity verification on all circuits, connection tightness verification, and visual inspection of cable routing and protection. Live testing after energisation includes voltage verification at new location, load testing on all circuits, RCD testing if RCDs installed or affected, circuit function verification throughout property, and voltage drop assessment on extended circuits. Certification and completion issues Electrical Safety Certificate for relocation, provides circuit schedule from new location, demonstrates switchboard operation at new location, explains any differences from previous location, cleans all work areas removing protection and restoring property, and provides guidance on switchboard access and operation.

How Distance Affects Switchboard Relocation
Short Relocations (1-3 metres): Simplest relocations with minimal cable work.

Maximising Value by Upgrading Whilst Relocating
Install Modern Switchboard Rather Than Relocating Old Board: Relocation presents ideal upgrade opportunity.

AS/NZS 3000 Standards for Switchboard Location
Mandatory Clearances: New location must provide 1 metre clear working space directly in front of switchboard for safe operation and maintenance.

“Prompt, professional and reasonably priced. Glenn went above and beyond to make sure everything was done properly. Will definitely use again.”

3-Phase Switchboard for Workshop
The Challenge
The homeowner needed 3-phase power in their Newtown workshop for a welder and compressor but the existing single-phase switchboard couldn't handle the additional load. The 40-year-old board also had no safety switches.
Our Solution
Glenn coordinated the 3-phase connection with Ergon Energy and installed a new 3-phase distribution board in the workshop. He also upgraded the main house switchboard to include full RCD protection and proper circuit labelling.
The Outcome
The homeowner now runs all workshop equipment reliably on dedicated 3-phase circuits. Both the house and workshop switchboards are fully compliant, and the clear circuit labelling makes it easy to identify each circuit.
