A safety switch (also called an RCD or residual current device) monitors the flow of electricity in a circuit. If it detects electricity leaking to earth—such as through a person or damaged wiring—it trips almost instantly. That rapid disconnection is what prevents serious injury and electrical fires.
- Trips in 20-30 milliseconds
- Detects dangerous leakage current (30mA protection for general circuits)
- Prevents electric shock in everyday scenarios
- Reduces fire risk from wiring faults
- Resets after faults are addressed
In Queensland, RCDs are required on all final subcircuits in residential properties. If your switchboard does not provide this protection, you are not compliant.
